Parent of 5: Part 5 – UK

My stories

My School Story
Story 5.

My smallest child is just 5, summer born and started to crawl at 4 months.

She says repeatedly that she just wants to explore the world....but also just wants to be at home with mummy.

She's a tenacious, formidable, fragile being...a dialectical delight.

We found a rare gem of a school, just a handful of children and wonderful teachers.

And reception was lovely, but year one started with red, sore lips and sleepless nights. 'We don't play much any more and the work is too hard'.

But my high masking child smiled all day long and broke her heart at home. Jumping about became lolling around, and worry became etched on her face.

After years of watching my other children struggle on through, we made the decision that she would both explore the world and stay home with her mummy.

And we had the support of the fantastic headteacher who expressed her sorrow, but understood.

No one had ever listened to me before like she did.
My Home Ed Story
We're only a week in but so far, the jumping about has recommenced, and the nights are peaceful. Life is good.
How I think schools could be better.
Essentially we have to allow children to be children and we need to re-learn what this means. We have to stop thinking that them making as much money as possible is the end goal, and realise that them growing into happy adults is the only thing we should really worry about.
