Parent of 5: Part 3 – UK

My stories

My School Story
Story 3.

My child was just like me.

When I realised during the COVID lockdown that I was AuDHD, I realised she was too.

She was 8. And I spoke to her primary school.

'No!! She can't be autistic! She's perfectly normal'.

That was the first problem....'normal'. 'we don't see anything here's.

Luckily, the SENco trusted me and we had the referral done.

Shortly after, my child needed the toilet and raised her hand to ask to go.

She wasn't allowed.

Three days later, I took a sobbing child into A&E with severe constipation.

She was in such pain and just because she had not been allowed to go to the toilet and the turmoil that had caused.

She asked to change school and we watched her blossom with confidence in this new small, nurturing setting.

Secondary school has become a problem. ARFID, problems with friendships, getting told off for doodling.

Anxiety in every lesson.

My child uses their toilet pass to go out and cry in the loo.

They don't eat until they come home.

They cry in the car all the way home.

They want to stay because of the precious friendships they have.

No one is helping us.

How I think schools could be better.
I think the question needs to be asked 'what does school need to achieve?'.

At the moment, it seems like the focus is attendance and making sure all children wear black socks.
