My stories

My School Story
Our daughter found school an incredibly unpleasant environment.

The teachers were more interested in box ticking than the children’s mental health.

The way they spoke to our daughter was so unkind, trying to treat year 2/3’s like secondary school children.

Their expectations were unreasonable.

The curriculum is outdated, the teaching methods are outdated and many attitudes are outdated.

They didn’t have any patience for neurodivergence.

Schools are just so underfunded that correct training and fantastic teachers are few and far between.

Home education was the best choice we’ve ever made for our child.

She’s got her sparkle back.
My Home Ed Story
We de-registered and heard from the LA within a few weeks.

The school were quite easy about it, no real issues there.

We found some wonderful groups, very child lead!

She learns at her own speed and can really focus on the subjects and topics she loves.
She’s come on leaps and bounds in their reading and maths since leaving school.

She really thrives with one on one learning.
How I think schools could be better.
Better training for teachers, more funding, more understanding around neurodivergence.

More in depth teaching about kindness, anti bullying talks, acceptance, differences etc.

A more child lead environment, learning through play for much longer than just reception.

Reasonable expectations of children, respect being earned rather than expected.

Less ridiculous rules, so that the important rules can actually be respected.

More focus on mental health and what the children enjoy rather than worrying too much about pushing the children to have the best grades.

They will naturally excel in topics that are taught in an interesting way. Academia should not be seen as the top priority.

Very important yes, but not more important than their mental wellbeing.
