My School Story
My eldest son really struggled with school, not helped by the fact that we moved a lot due to being military. Unfortunately no matter how much I asked for extra support or help for him, I was always told I was depressed or wasn't coping with military life.
My son climbed fences to escape some schools as he felt like certain teachers targeted him.
Fast forward to his last school.
He was repeatedly out in isolation or detention.
I had numerous phone calls telling me that my son was not interested in being at school and was disruptive.
Bearing in mind the boy left the house everyday and willingly took a bus 5 miles there each day, I'm sure if he didn't want to be there he would never have been on the bus daily to attend.
A matter of weeks before his GCSE's the school rang me to inform me they'd be dropping him from a few subjects. There reasoning was due to him struggling in said subject, however I feel it was because his low grades would impact their scores.
He left without a single pass grade but has since gone on to pass his maths and English through his work placement.
I feel I let him down as I didn't fight harder for him.
Schools need to teach children as individuals and understand that they don't all learn in the same way!

How I think schools could be better.
To treat children as individuals and truly listen to them when they are struggling.
If a child is falling behind in a subject area they need to find out why and support them in a way that works.
