My School Story
I collected my ASD 8 year old from school, once in the car I got a strong urine smell, his trousers were dry. I asked him what happened, he explained how he was desperate for the toilet in the middle of class but was worried about disturbing his teacher, so he just wet himself (he has been dry day and night since he was 3.5 years old and hasn’t had an accident since he was 4) he went on to tell me that it was “ok” no one noticed and went through the rest of the day with wet trousers until they dried. He has an EHCP, an extra TA in class to support his learning. He struggles to express his needs, he requires the adults around him to spot the visual cues that he needs support or help, this is all in his EHCP, yet no one noticed this little boy fidgeting in his seat desperate to use the toilet, no one noticed him walking around school, going to lunch with wet trousers, no one noticed the smell or did they just chose to ignore it. I was devastated, it felt like neglect, my beautiful little boy would have felt terrified as he sat in his seat at the back of the class wetting himself, then just carried on with his day unable to communicate to anyone what had happened, ashamed and No one noticed!!!!
What happened next...
I’m am now Home Educating, where my little boy is safe, supported, listened to, and has a voice. He will never suffer in Silence again.
How I think schools could be better.
More funding more training. The School system is broken, our SEN children are suffering, LAs are pushing mainstream schools for our SEN children when they don’t have the funds or resources to provide them with the support and care they need.
